In any one year, it is estimated that one in five Australian adults will experience a mental health condition. Despite considerable evidence that many mental health conditions are preventable, too many people in our community experience mental health conditions that affect their wellbeing and their ability to participate fully in everyday life. At some point in their life, approximately half of all Australians will experience a diagnosable mental illness (ABS 2018; AIHW 2018b).

Organisations also have a vital role to play in providing workplace environments that are mentally healthy. The workplace may contribute to the development or worsening of depression and anxiety conditions through factors such as organisational change, job strain, job dissatisfaction and traumatic events. On the other hand, for many employees, work may be a protective factor against the development of depression and anxiety conditions. Employers who create a thriving workplace fostering mental health for employees can expect a positive return on their investment in the order of 2.3 times, in the form of improved productivity, reduced absenteeism and presenteeism, and lower compensation claims.

Mental Health and Crisis Support Training can equip individuals with insights and tools to support each other and to help embed resilience.

The training is effective in helping participants:

  • Increase knowledge and awareness of mental health and wellbeing issues and behaviours
  • Improve the skills and confidence to deal with crisis
  • Seek help early & effective communication of mental health needs
  • Improve Inter-personal relationships
  • Reduce mental health stigma
  • Become aware of and utilise employee assistance programs (EAP) and other support services
