Knowing how to provide emergency medical care to a person in need is an essential life-saving skill. Whether you require a certification for work or are just interested in expanding your knowledge base, first aid and CPR courses are a vital life skill everyone needs to know.

As a part of the Victorian community for over 136 years, St John Ambulance is proud to offer both in-person and online first aid courses.

All about our first aid courses

A first aid course is designed to teach participants how to properly administer first aid during an emergency. Our first aid courses offer a variety of different learning opportunities, from tutorials to hands-on training. The skills you learn during your course depend on which course you take — some courses are specialised to unique groups.

Some of the most common skills taught in St John Ambulance first aid courses include:

  • Emergency identification and response — Learn how to identify a possibly dangerous situation before providing aid to others. Become educated about the initial steps of providing medical care.
  • CPR and AED training — Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving procedure commonly used during emergency medical situations. Learn how to provide high-quality CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) device. Adult, child and infant CPR training is covered during these first aid courses.
  • Basic wound care — Using the contents of a standard first aid kit, learn how to wrap and dress wounds until you or the person in need can get additional medical attention.
  • Injury care — Sprains, fractures and broken bones are common injuries. Learn how to make splints, wraps and other limb supportive devices from the contents of a first aid kit.
  • Choking — Being unable to breathe is a serious medical emergency. Our courses cover how to assist someone who is choking or having difficulty breathing. Adult, child and infant choking situations will be covered in our first aid courses.
  • Asthma & Anaphylaxis — This course teaches how to recognise and respond to asthma and anaphylaxis first aid emergencies as well as asthma and anaphylaxis management.

Whether you opt to take our in-person or online first aid courses, you will be provided with the opportunity to practice your skills hands-on with the guidance of your First Aid Trainer. We know you will enjoy participating and asking questions as you get comfortable with the contents of a standard first aid kit.

Who should do a first aid course?

We recommend that everyone take a first aid course. Having first aid training is an excellent life skill to use and helps to improve the safety of our local communities. Common professions that require first aid training include:

  • All medical professionals
  • Childcare workers
  • Construction workers
  • Outdoor and wilderness guides

  • Law enforcement and first responders
