Caring, Teaching, Leading: Maree’s Passion Finds a Home at St John

Maree is a Training Team Leader at St John Ambulance Victoria, but her journey to this role is anything but ordinary. With a heart for caring and a passion for teaching, Maree’s career path has taken her across the globe, through hospitals, classrooms, and into the lives of thousands of students and trainers.

Originally from New Zealand, Maree began her career as a nurse, working in her home country, Bermuda, Australia, and the Middle East. When her children were born, she shifted into education, working in a nursery department at an international school. That’s when something clicked, she discovered she loved combining health care and teaching.

When Maree returned to Australia, she came across a job ad for the First Aid in Schools Program at St John. It was the perfect fit: “It brought together the two things I enjoyed the most: health and primary school education.” She applied, got the role, and never looked back.

“I absolutely loved teaching first aid to kids,” Maree says. “It’s such a powerful thing to see a child go from curious to confident, knowing they could help in an emergency.”

But Maree didn’t stop there.

With encouragement from her colleagues, she completed her Training and Assessment (TAE) qualification through St John and transitioned into commercial training, teaching adult learners. Eventually, an opportunity opened up to lead a team, and Maree stepped up once again.

Today, as a Training Team Leader, Maree continues to teach while also supporting and mentoring other trainers.

“Watching someone join our team, grow into a confident trainer, and know I had a part in that journey, that’s incredibly rewarding,” she says. “I still get to teach, which I love, and I also get to be there for my team if they need help or guidance.”

For Maree, working at St John has always felt like being part of something bigger.

“People don’t always realise how much St John is involved in; we do more than just training. We have community programs, non-emergency patient transport, advanced education, and public health initiatives like Defib in Your Street,” she says. “It’s a name people trust, when you think first aid, you think St John.”

Maree has a strong personal connection to the organisation, too. Her father was a St John volunteer back in New Zealand. “It’s always been part of my life,” she shares.

What motivates her every day? Variety, purpose, and people.

“No two days are ever the same. I never know what my inbox will hold, or who might need support that day. But that’s what I love about it; I enjoy being there for others, and I’m proud of the work we do.”

Outside of work, Maree enjoys walking her dog, watching cricket with her family, and making the most of family time with her three children.

Her message to others?

“Learn the number triple zero. And don’t feel like you have to know everything; just take that first step and do a CPR course. The basics can save a life.”
