Young, Skilled, and Community-Minded: Ambrose’s Path with St John

At just 18 years old, Ambrose Strentz is already a familiar face in his community. A dedicated volunteer with St John Ambulance Victoria, Ambrose began his journey four years ago as a youth member. Today, he proudly serves as an adult member and youth leader at Whitehorse Division.

What began as a simple desire to learn first aid has grown into a deep commitment to helping others. “Volunteering means giving your time to help people,” says Ambrose. “You don’t get paid in money, but in experience, knowledge and the chance to make a real difference.”

One of the most rewarding experiences for him is helping others in their time of need, whether at events or as a bystander. “People do trust you, and they trust the uniform. They know you have the training you need.”

This year marks 100 years of the St John Youth Program in Australia, a legacy Ambrose is proud to be part of. He reflects on attending national youth camps and the impact they have had on his outlook: “It’s amazing to see what St John is doing around the country, giving young people life-saving skills and leadership opportunities.”

Although Ambrose is currently working as an apprentice electrician, his experience with St John has opened his eyes to new possibilities. “I’m not from a healthcare background,” he explains, “but volunteering has made me think about a future in first aid or even emergency response work.”

What sets Ambrose apart is the practical experience he brings from his trade, teamwork, problem-solving, and working under pressure. It’s a reminder that volunteers come from all walks of life, each offering something unique.

He hopes the next 100 years of the youth program will inspire more young people to get involved. “A lot of young people feel disconnected from the community. Volunteering is a way to change that. I’d love to see more of us giving back, it’s rewarding, and it gives you a great start in life.”

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week under the theme Connecting Communities, Ambrose encourages his fellow volunteers to wear their green uniforms with pride. “Get out there, have fun, and make a difference.”
