Volunteering that Opens Doors: Holly’s Story with St John

When Holly joined St John Ambulance Victoria, she never imagined it would lead to a leadership role, help her grow professionally, and shape her future in healthcare. Now, six years later, she is the Bayside Youth Manager, and a passionate advocate for volunteering.
“I started like many others, just helping out at events,” Holly says. “My first event was a Wiggles concert! I’d only been with St John for about three months when someone asked if I could come to a Youth Division night and act as a patient for their training scenario. I thought, why not?”
That one night opened the door to something much bigger.
“At the end of the session, someone mentioned the division didn’t have a manager and asked if I wanted to step up. I said yes, and I’ve been in the role ever since.”
Holly is also finishing a science degree and plans to apply for medicine in the future. In the meantime, she is focused on gaining hands-on experience in patient care and taking a breather before diving into the next stage of study.
“St John has been amazing for my personal and professional growth,” she says. “I’ve gained management experience, admin skills, and real confidence through the Youth Program and event work. These are skills I may not have had the opportunity to develop had I not been involved with St John”

Holly recently received her 5-Year Service Awards handed by Garth Bateson, General Manager | Volunteer & Event Health Services
When asked about her favourite part of volunteering, Holly says it is hard to choose just one.
“I really love the local events,” she says. “You get to connect with your community, especially kids. They jump in the ambulance, flick on the lights, and get so excited. It’s fun, safe, and shows them a positive side of healthcare.”
But she also enjoys the big music festivals, where volunteers camp out and bond during their work shifts together. “You spend full days and nights working side by side, which brings everyone closer together as a team (almost like a second family)" she says.
For anyone thinking about volunteering, Holly’s message is simple:
“Just give it a go and see how you feel. St John is really flexible, you can do as much or as little as you’re ready for. And there are so many different areas you can try.”
