Trading Corporate Law for Care: Why Josh Chose NEPT

For many people, career paths follow a predictable trajectory. For Josh, however, the decision to step away from a corporate law firm and into the dynamic world of Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) with St John Ambulance Victoria was anything but conventional, and it’s a move he hasn’t looked back on since.

“Before joining St John, I was working in a law firm,” Josh explains. “But I reached a point where I needed something different. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, staying active, and doing something meaningful, and NEPT really stood out.”

Three years on, Josh is thriving as a Patient Transport Officer (PTO), bringing a strong sense of purpose and compassion to every shift.

A Role Where No Two Days Are the Same

Josh is part of St John’s NEPT team, which specialises in safely transporting low to medium acuity patients between healthcare facilities, appointments and home. It’s a role that requires adaptability, clinical awareness and strong interpersonal skills.

“There’s always a new challenge,” he says. “No two days are ever the same, but there’s nothing we can’t overcome as a team.”

On a typical shift, Josh supports Ambulance Transport Attendants (ATA), sharing responsibilities that range from driving to directly caring for patients during transit. This hands-on role allows him to build meaningful connections while ensuring patients feel safe and supported.

Driven by Patient Care

What makes Josh most proud isn’t just the skills he’s developed; it’s the impact he has on the people he transports.

“Being in a situation where you need patient transport isn’t easy,” he reflects. “So being able to help someone, getting them to hospital when they need it, and sometimes bringing them home again later, it’s really special. Those moments stay with you.”

It’s this continuity of care, trust and empathy that defines NEPT at St John and highlights the vital role PTOs play in the broader healthcare system.

A Supportive Team Culture

Josh credits much of his positive experience to the strong culture within St John Ambulance Victoria.

“You get a lot of support, not just from your partner on the day, but from your team leader and the wider team,” he says. “We debrief together, we check in with each other, and that makes a big difference.”

NEPT teams are made up of people from all walks of life, creating a diverse and collaborative environment.

“Everyone comes from a different background, and that makes the job really interesting,” Josh adds.

Flexibility and Work-Life Balance

Despite the demands of the role, Josh has found a rhythm that allows him to prioritise both work and wellbeing.

“I make time for physical training; it helps with mental health and staying resilient. I do Pilates, go to the gym, swim, and I’m also into motorsports.”

He also highlights the flexibility built into NEPT rostering.

“You submit your availability, and the team works with you. They’re really adaptable, which helps you balance everything else in your life such as friends and family.”

Finding His Path at St John

Josh first became aware of St John through community events such as motocross and sporting events, where he saw crews in action.

“I looked them up online, saw the NEPT role, and decided to apply, and I’m still here, enjoying it immensely,” he says with a smile.

His journey into the role included completing the HLT31120 Certificate III Non-Emergency Patient Transport course, submitting an expression of interest, and progressing through interviews and an assessment day.

“It’s a great process; you get to learn more about the organisation, meet people, and really see if it’s the right fit.”

No Regrets, Only Opportunity

For anyone considering a career change or looking for a more meaningful role, Josh’s message is simple:

“Life is short, so you may as well do something you enjoy.”

At St John Ambulance Victoria, NEPT offers more than just a job. It’s an opportunity to be part of a supportive team, develop valuable skills, and make a genuine difference in people’s lives, every single day.

“I’ve got no regrets at all,” Josh says. “It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
