St John Ambulance Victoria volunteers recently took part in a large-scale emergency simulation designed to sharpen response skills in a major incident. Held at the Seymour Railway Heritage Centre, the training brought together multiple emergency services for a mock train versus truck collision.

The exercise, run in partnership with the Country Fire Authority (CFA), Victoria Police, Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES), Ambulance Victoria and the Australian Defence Force, created a realistic and high-pressure environment to test how agencies work together during a mass-casualty event.

Our volunteers played a crucial role on the day, delivering hands-on patient care, triage support, and first aid in a scene filled with simulated injuries and chaos. Their calm approach, clinical skills and teamwork stood out as they treated dozens of mock casualties in difficult conditions.

“These exercises are an important part of our training. Our volunteers are often among the first to respond in real-life emergencies, and it’s vital they feel confident in their roles when every second counts.” Said Gordon Botwright, St John Ambulance Victoria CEO

Simulations like this are not just about practising for the worst, they highlight the dedication, resilience, and professionalism of our people in green. From providing immediate first aid at public events to supporting the community during emergencies, our volunteers are ready when it matters most.

But we need more people like them

With growing demand for community support and first aid services across the state, St John Ambulance Victoria is calling on more individuals to join as volunteers. No prior medical experience is needed, just a willingness to learn, help others, and be part of something meaningful.
