Ruby: Leading the Next Generation of First Aid Volunteers

At just 18, Ruby Dargaville is already leaving a big mark on her community through her work with St John Ambulance Victoria. Since joining in late 2022, empowered by her mum who wanted her to learn some first aid skills, Ruby has gone from a youth member to a youth leader, helping other young volunteers grow their skills and confidence.

“I completely fell in love with the program,” Ruby says. “It’s not just about volunteering at events. It’s about teaching, encouraging others, and creating a space where young people feel capable and empowered.”

Ruby is now based at the Bayside Division, where she inspires younger cadets and leads activities that prepare them for real-world first aid duties. “When we go out to events, I want them to feel ready and confident. There’s something so rewarding about being able to help people when they need it most.”

Ruby’s journey with St John has been shaped by friendships, leadership, and a deep sense of purpose. She speaks fondly of Easter Camp, an annual gathering that brings youth from across the state together for learning and connection. “Some of my closest friends are people I met through the youth program. It’s a really vibrant and supportive community.”

Outside of volunteering, Ruby is studying a Bachelor of Music and hopes to become a music educator. “Being a youth leader has taught me patience and how to teach others, skills I know I’ll carry into my future career,” she says.

While she’s not pursuing a career in healthcare like many of her peers, Ruby believes everyone can benefit from learning first aid. “Whether you’re looking to make friends, feel more empowered, or simply want to help others, you’ll find all of that at St John.”

Looking ahead, Ruby hopes the next 100 years of St John Youth continue to build on its legacy of service, kindness, and community. “I’d love to see more youth members on duty and even more support and understanding from adults at events. Young people have so much to offer.”

For Ruby, volunteering is about more than just skill-building. “It teaches empathy and kindness; things we all need a bit more of these days.”
