More Than First Aid: Melissa’s 11-Year Journey of Care, Connection and Community

For Melissa, nursing has always been about giving back.

Working as a paediatric ICU nurse, she already plays a vital role in caring for some of the most vulnerable patients. But more than a decade ago, Melissa realised she wanted to do more for her community.

“I was looking for something extra,” she says. “A friend suggested volunteering with St John, and 11 years later, I still love it just as much as the day I joined.”

This National Volunteer Week, Melissa’s story is a reminder that volunteering isn’t just about what you give, it’s also about what you gain.

A journey of growth and opportunity

From her early days learning alongside experienced volunteers to now mentoring newer members, Melissa’s journey has been shaped by continuous growth.

“Volunteering has given me so many opportunities, to learn new skills, step into leadership roles, and support others,” she says. “You’re always learning, and you’re always evolving.”

While many people associate St John with first aid, Melissa says the experience goes far beyond clinical care.

“It’s not just about treating patients. It’s about teamwork, communication, leadership, and everything that happens behind the scenes to make an event run safely.”

From coordinating large-scale events to learning radio communications and equipment management, Melissa has developed skills she never expected, skills that complement her professional career and broaden her impact.

Making a difference when it matters most

Whether she’s working at a major event or supporting a single patient, Melissa brings the same calm, compassionate approach.

“I like to think I bring empathy and calmness under pressure,” she says. “People come to us when they need help, often in stressful situations. Being able to listen, reassure and connect with them, that’s just as important as the first aid itself.”

For Melissa, even the smallest moments matter.

“It doesn’t have to be a big event or a big save. Even helping one person, you’ve made a difference.”

A community built on connection

Beyond the skills and experience, it’s the people who make volunteering truly special.

“The friendships you build are incredible,” Melissa says. “You’re part of a team that supports each other and works together to make an impact.”

That sense of belonging, and shared purpose, is what has kept her coming back year after year.

A message for Volunteer Week

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, Melissa’s message to fellow volunteers is simple, but heartfelt:

“Thank you. Thank you for showing up, for making an impact, and for being there when it matters most. I’m so grateful for the friendships, the experiences, and the opportunity to be part of something so meaningful.”

Be part of something bigger

For anyone considering volunteering, Melissa encourages taking that first step.

“It’s not as intimidating as you might think, and it can fit around your life. Whether you attend one event or many, every contribution counts.”

Because at its heart, volunteering with St John is about more than first aid, it’s about compassion, connection, and community.

And as Melissa’s story shows, it’s also about finding purpose in the moments that matter most.
