It’s your time to volunteer: Phoebe’s story
For Phoebe, volunteering with St John Ambulance Victoria started with a simple desire: to make a meaningful difference.
Now in her third year studying Law and Science at Monash University, Phoebe joined St John looking for a way to give back to her community and quickly found something much more.
“I’ve always been interested in first aid and helping others,” she says. “But after my first year of uni, I wanted to have more of an impact. Joining St John just felt like the right step.”
Since then, Phoebe has become a familiar face across a wide range of St John activities, from major events at Melbourne’s biggest venues to something a little smaller, but just as impactful: teaching first aid to kindergarten children.
Making a difference, big and small
While Phoebe enjoys the energy and teamwork of large-scale events, it’s often the quieter moments that stay with her.
“Anytime I’m helping a patient, especially when they’re feeling vulnerable or unsure, it reassures me that I’m on the right path,” she says.
One particular shift stands out, a moment where multiple patients needed care at once.
“It was a challenging situation but being able to step in and support people when they needed it most felt incredibly rewarding.”
Inspiring the next generation
As part of St John’s First aid in Kindergartens program, Phoebe is helping shape the next generation of lifesavers, and it’s an experience she describes as both fun and meaningful.
“Working with kids is amazing. They have so much energy and curiosity,” she says.
“They genuinely want to learn how to help others.”
For Phoebe, these sessions go beyond teaching first aid basics.
“It’s about making first aid fun and accessible from a young age. If children grow up feeling confident and aware of how to help someone, that can make a real difference in the community.”
Finding community and confidence
Like many volunteers, Phoebe admits the journey wasn’t without its challenges, especially coming from a non-healthcare background.
“At the start, it can feel like a lot to take in,” she says. “But with ongoing training, attending events, and being part of a supportive team, everything starts to come together.”
That sense of community is one of the things she values most.
“Everyone at St John is so friendly. You’re constantly meeting new people, learning new skills, and growing in confidence.”
Making time for what matters
Balancing university, volunteering, and a busy social life isn’t always easy, but for Phoebe, it’s worth it.
“Volunteering has enriched my life and my uni experience in so many ways,” she says.
Her advice to anyone considering joining?
“Just give it a go. There’s so much more to gain than you expect.”
It’s your time
This National Volunteer Week, Phoebe’s story is a reminder that volunteering isn’t just about giving time; it’s about gaining purpose, connection, and the chance to make a real impact.
Whether it’s supporting patients at major events or inspiring young children to learn lifesaving skills, volunteers like Phoebe are at the heart of what we do.
And there’s always room for more.
