For nearly three decades, Josh has dedicated his time to serving Victorian communities through St John Ambulance Victoria.

What began as a decision made almost 27 years ago has grown into a lifelong commitment, taking him from volunteer first aider to Regional Manager for Northern Victoria. Along the way, St John has become more than a volunteer organisation. It has become part of family life.

This Father's Day, that connection has come full circle, with Josh's youngest daughter Emily, who has just turned 13 years-old, recently joining the St John Youth Program.

"I also joined it just because he did it," Emily said with a laugh. "It looked cool and I wanted to be cool like him."

Behind the light-hearted comment is something deeper: a young person inspired by the example set by her father.

For Josh, seeing Emily discover St John for herself is a proud moment.

"It's good to see her have the opportunities, but also find her own path," he said. "I'm very proud of her being able to step up and give something a go and stick with it."

Living in regional Victoria, Josh knows firsthand the difference volunteers make.

"Local people look after local issues," he said. "In remote and regional communities, it's important that the community comes together in times of sickness, distress, suffering or danger."

Those values of helping others have naturally become part of family life.

Although Emily is still too young to attend event duties, she has already spent plenty of time attending training sessions with her dad and learning about first aid.

"It's good because I have someone I can talk to," she said. "And if things get tricky, I know I can ask Dad for help."

The pair have already shared many St John memories over the years. Josh recalls Emily accompanying him to volunteer activities when she was young, while Emily enjoys helping during training scenarios and learning new skills.

Outside of St John, the Jarrott family enjoys spending time together through simple activities: cooking and taking family trips. Emily fondly remembers making banana bread as a small child for one of her dad's birthdays, while Josh says some of his proudest moments come from watching his daughter grow her talents and confidence.

Whether it's seeing Emily volunteer, develop new skills through training, or perform flute solos in concerts, Josh enjoys watching her pursue her interests and challenge herself.

For Emily, volunteering is already helping shape future ambitions. At just 13 years old, she hopes to one day work in healthcare, potentially studying nursing and midwifery.

"Having St John gives me a higher chance to maybe go down that path," she said.

As Father's Day approaches, neither Josh nor Emily feels the need for elaborate messages.

Emily says she'd love to make her dad breakfast, even if he's not convinced about breakfast in bed.

Josh keeps it simple.

"It would probably just be the old, 'I love you'," he said.

Sometimes the strongest lessons children learn aren't taught in words. They are learned by watching. After 27 years of service, Josh's commitment to helping others has inspired the next generation to do the same.

And for this father and daughter, that's a legacy worth celebrating.
