Finding Purpose: How Volunteering Transformed Steven’s Retirement

At 70 years old, Steven Donnellon isn’t slowing down, in fact, he’s just getting started.
After retiring from years of self-employment, Steven found himself at home one Friday morning wondering what to do with his time. His wife, Liz, had her own plans: gym, coffee with friends, and made it clear she wouldn’t be followed around. She looked him in the eye and said, “Get out and find something to do.”
That’s when Steven saw an ad from St John Ambulance, looking for volunteer drivers. He thought, “Why not? I’ll go have a look.”
And that simple decision changed everything.
Steven now spends his time volunteering with St John Community Transport Service, helping vulnerable and elderly people get to appointments, visit loved ones, or just enjoy a trip to the shops. He says the role has brought joy, meaning, and a deep sense of connection to his life.
“I love it. It’s fantastic,” Steven says. “The people are wonderful. I’ve fallen right into it; I feel right at home.”
For Steven, each day is different and special. He meets new people, listens to their stories, and learns about their lives.
“Everyone has a story to tell,” he shares. “It’s like opening a box of chocolates, you never know who you’re going to get. I look forward to seeing my regulars, hearing about their day, and just being there for them.”
But more than just driving, Steven believes the St John uniform and trusted name offer something else: reassurance.
“Some of the people I drive are unwell, and they don’t feel safe in taxis or Ubers. But when they see the St John badge, they feel comfortable. They know we’re there to help, and we care.”
Steven says volunteering has helped him, too. It’s given him purpose and filled his retirement years with connection, laughter, and gratitude.
“I go home at night feeling really good about myself,” he says. “You can’t just take from the world your whole life; you have to give something back.”
And that’s exactly what he’s doing. One drive, one conversation, one connection at a time.
To anyone thinking about volunteering, Steven has simple advice: “Give it a go. You’ll never know if it’s for you unless you try. But I promise, it could change your life, just like it changed mine.”
