Behind the Scenes of St John’s Youth Program: Meet Sarona Sagele
As St John Ambulance celebrates 100 years of the Youth Program in 2025, it’s the people behind the scenes who keep that proud legacy growing for the next generation. One of them is Sarona Sagele, St John Victoria’s newest Youth Development Officer, who joined the team in July.
Although she still considers herself “quite new,” Sarona has already found her place at St John.
“I’m really enjoying getting to know everyone and learning what each department does. It’s nice to come into the office and be surrounded by people,” she says.
Before joining St John, Sarona worked in communications at the Youth Affairs Council Victoria, an organisation that advocates for young people across the state. Her role took her from Melbourne to regional towns like Mildura, Sale, Bright and Mansfield, overseeing everything from social media and community campaigns to pitching stories to local media.
“I really enjoy working in the youth space, helping young people find their path,” she says.
That passion for supporting young people is what led Sarona to St John. In her new role, she helps youth members navigate the full journey, from gaining accreditations to transitioning into adult First Responders who deliver first aid at community events.
“At St John, I get to be part of the whole process,” she explains. “It’s rewarding to know that the youth members are getting trained and accredited accordingly to be ready to assist the community.”
While much of her work happens behind the scenes, liaising with parents, division managers and volunteers, Sarona plays a key role in keeping the Youth Program running smoothly. She has also been busy improving recruitment processes, ensuring adult and youth certifications are up to date, and helping new members join the movement.
“One of the most challenging parts is the waiting, following up with so many different people takes time,” she admits with a smile. “But seeing progress makes it worth it.”
Sarona’s background in journalism and her current law studies complement her work perfectly.
“In journalism, I liked the idea of giving people a voice, and to me, law is the same. They go hand in hand,” she says.
Outside of work and study, Sarona leads a busy yet grounded life. A self-described “big family girl,” she spends most of her free time with her family, and her boyfriend. She enjoys running, reading before bed, and volunteering at her church’s young adults’ program in Clayton.
“I usually tell people my life is pretty simple, family, church, study, and a bit of running,” she laughs.
With her mix of communications experience, legal curiosity and a genuine heart for young people, Sarona is helping shape the next chapter of St John’s Youth Program, a program that for 100 years has empowered young Victorians to grow, lead and give back to their communities.
