What will I need on the day of the class?

• Your training equipment pack from St John.
• A laptop, personal computer or tablet – this will be the main device that you will use. It will need to have a webcam, microphone and speakers. You’ll need to be able to position the webcam so that the trainer can see you performing some of the assessments on the ground.
• A secondary device like a smart phone or tablet. This will be used for accessing additional websites for your theory questions and to simulate a defibrillator.
• A clear space on the floor where you can undertake assessments. Make sure you have carpet or something comfortable to kneel on.
• A form of photo identification.
• Students will need to arrange for someone to assist them for part of their class, to act as the ‘mock casualty’. They could use a colleague, or a friend or family member who is primary school aged or older. They do not need any first aid knowledge, they just need to be willing to act as a patient – for example, to have their arm bandaged or be rolled into the recovery position. The mock casualty will only be required for part of the class. For CPR, a mock casualty is required for 15 minutes in the second half of the class, for Provide First Aid, the mock casualty is required for 1.15 hours in the second half of the class.

What will happen during the class?

Your class will be conducted via a Zoom video conference. You will be joined by other students in a small group led by an experienced St John trainer. Your trainer will explain the assessments during the class and you will perform the practical exercises in front of the webcam.

For some assessments you’ll need to move your main device (computer or tablet) so that the trainer can see you on the ground. For other assessments you can be seated in front of your computer. 

You will answer the remainder of your theory questions online during the class – your trainer will give you a website address to access on your secondary device (e.g. smartphone).

How do I use Zoom?

To access your training session, click on the link provided on your Student Readiness page and follow the prompts. This may take a few minutes so we recommend you commence this 10 minutes before your class.

Important: If prompted, please download the Zoom app so that you have full functionality. 

If you experience connectivity issues during the session and drop out of the meeting at any time, simply click on the same link again to re-enter.

How should I set up my equipment?

You will commence the session seated in front of your main device (computer or laptop) at a desk or wherever you are comfortable.

For the first assessment you will be asked to re-position your webcam so that the trainer can see you on the ground while you demonstrate the recovery position and complete cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on your manikin. It is important you can still see the screen at this time.

You will need to lower your laptop or tilt the camera forward so that the trainer can see you and the manikin on the ground. This can be tricky if you are using a tablet as you will need to tilt it forward slightly, so please practice setting this up before your class.

Please inflate your manikin as per the instructions on the box and have all the equipment ready for the start of the training session.
