Provide Advanced First Aid / Advanced First Aid

St John’s HLTAID006 Provide Advanced First Aid is appropriate for people who work in high risk areas, act as first aiders to larger facilities or groups, or work in areas where help may be delayed or have difficulty accessing casualties. This course covers a broad range of advanced skills and provides you with high level skills in management of large incidents, major trauma, sudden cardiac arrest, emotionally disturbed and drug affected casualties.

Duration: 3 days (with pre-work) Students complete an e-learning module. Students that have completed HLTAID003 Provide First Aid within the previous 12 months may request an exemption from day one of the course.

4 days (no pre-work) There is no pre-work and students are required to attend all the days of the course except for those who have completed HLTAID003 Provide First Aid may be entitled for exemption.
Course Outline: Management of large incidents, major trauma, emotionally disturbed and drug affected casualties

  • Use of spine boards and stretchers
  • Managing emotionally disturbed casualties
  • Pulse, blood pressure and pupil reactions
  • Medications

  • DRSABCD action plan
  • Infection control
  • Automated external defibrillation (AED)
  • Soft bag resuscitation
  • Administration of oxygen
  • Oxygen delivery systems
  • Oxygen powered resuscitation
  • Oropharyngeal airways
  • Suction equipment
  • Post incident stress management
  • Evaluating provision of First Aid
Statement(s) of attainment:
  • HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID002 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid
  • HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid
Those who hold a HLTAID003 Provide First Aid certificate completed within the last 12 months are entitled for exemption from the 4 day. St John recommends, as per the First Aid in the Workplace Code of Practice and the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, that first aid skills are renewed every 3 years and resuscitation skills (HLTAID001/HLTAID007) are renewed every 12 months.
Assessment Information: A successful outcome for this statement of attainment will be determined by a range of different assessment methods including written assessment (questionnaire), observation of simulated and practical activities etc. You will be required to demonstrate CPR on a manikin on the floor.
