Q: Do I have to be 18 to volunteer for St John?
A: No
We have programs designed for people over the age of eight. Our St John Junior program is designed for 8-11 years old. Our Cadet program is for 11-17 years old.
Q: I already have a First Aid qualification. Do I need to do the course again to join?
A: No
You only need to provide a copy of your current First Aid certificate.
Q: I have never done first aid before. Can I be a First Aid Services volunteer?
A: Yes!
You will be provided with ongoing training in first aid and further training throughout your time with St John.
Q: I live in Shepparton. Can I be a volunteer in my local area?
A: Yes
St John has over 70 Divisions across Victoria. We are sure to find one in your local area.
Q: I have submitted an online application. What is the next step?
A: You will receive an email from our Membership team with the contact details of your local division. The next step is to arrange a visit. During your visit, you will receive an application pack and have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
Q: I am a student in the medical field. How will St John help me in my career?
A: St John offers many benefits and challenges for students and registered nurses. Through dealing with real patients, real situations and real symptoms you will gain valuable clinical experience unobtainable elsewhere.
Q: I have had a Criminal Records Check (CRC) for another job – can I use that instead of getting another one?
A: No
Our policy requires all new members to complete a new check through St John. We'll provide you with the appropriate forms and pay for the CRC on your behalf.
Q: My son loves being a cadet. How can I find out about his options when he turns 18?
A: We encourage all our Cadets to become an adult member when they turn 18, or take on a leadership role in the Cadet program. Ask your Divisional Superintendent about the options available or call us on 1300 360 455.
Q: What is the time commitment for First Aid Services volunteers?
A: 60 duty hours and weekly/fortnightly meetings.
All volunteers need to attend weekly/fortnightly meetings to maintain and develop new skills in first aid as well as complete 60 hours of first aid duties. This equates to 5 hours a month or 1 event month.
Q: Do I have to have a driver's licence to be a volunteer for St John?
A: No
Though you will need to arrange your own transport to and from events. Other members may be able to help you with your transport arrangements.
Q: I want to help but don't like the sight of blood. Is there another option?
A: Yes
There are many options to be a part of our extraordinary team. In the First Aid Services, there are other roles available including communications, administration and logistics. Alternatively, you could join our Community Care programs which offer companionship and support for those in your local community.
